double-oh-seven

happy double-oh-seven! i’m hoping this year is going to be as sexy as it sounds. it got off to a good start when i found out J-Lo named a pair of sexy heels after me. no really, check out the J-Lo Kyler II heels in silver! gonna have to give Jenny from the block a call and get myself a pair. i would order a pair, if they weren’t so fugly! i guess they’re not *so* bad but they’re not really my style. i’m wondering what other Kyler out there inspired these shoes since all the other Kylers i hear about have a Y chromosome. i got an email recently that went something exactly like this:

“Hello. I went on your offitial website. You have the same name as me. It is probly weird to have a 10 year old boy’s name.”

to which i cheekily responded:

“hi Kyler- thanks for writing. maybe you might think about it as being weird to have a grown up girl’s name!”

so there!

but back to J-Lo. if she has a Kyler II shoe, doesn’t that mean she also has a Kyler I shoe? i couldn’t find one but admittedly i didn’t look too hard. of course, i found the first pair by googling my name in a moment of narcissism.
in a second, regretted moment of narcissism, i just googled my name again and was thrilled to see my site at the top of the list. my joy was shortlived as the very next site listed happened to be a Baby Name site with the origin of names, including Kyler. i clicked through to finally find out the meaning of my name and here’s what it says:

The boy’s name Kyler is of Danish origin, and its meaning is “bowman, archer”.

For more information, see also the related name Kyle.

Kyler is a very rare male first name and a very popular surname, according to the 1990 U.S. Census.

ok, that ruined my mood, i can just see the little 10 year old boy Kyler laughing at me! that’s ok, i got one of the coolest Christmas presents from Dave Carlson who lives in Kylertown. Dave sent me a Kylertown care package that contained Kyler-wear from head to toe including this cool trucker hat and a Kylertown cookbook. nanny-nanny-boo-boo!

*****

Utah is my new favorite state. i took a road trip to Bryce Canyon around Christmas and it was spectacular. the entire drive there was postcard perfect, first through Zion National Park and then the “everyday” Utah countryside which makes your heart hurt until we hit Bryce Canyon National Park, which is known for its hoodoos (read about them on the Wikipedia here). the hoodoos, rock formations formed by a complex erosion process, are what’s left after 30-40 million years of weathering since the rock was formed. but still the erosion process continues at 2-4 feet every 100 years. someday they’ll be gone. i’m happy i had the chance to rest my eyes on thistruly stunning sight . if the ocean or the night sky doesn’t make you feel small anymore, go stand at a lookout over the hoodoos where you can see for 200 miles on a clear day.

coincidentally, i was just given the latest Muse CD Black Holes and Revelations as a present. looks like the cover photo was taken somewhere in Utah. i flipped it over and there’s a song on there called hoodoo. really haunting song. read the lyrics looking for the hoodoo connection since the word hoodoo doesn’t appear anywhere in the song other than the title. these lines caught my eye:

how did it come to be
tied to a railroad
no love to set us free
watch our souls fade away
and our bodies crumbling

at the turn of the new year when, like everyone else, i’ve been dwelling on how time slips through my fingers and is gone, these lyrics knock the wind out of me. are we like hoodoos? slowly eroding over time until little or nothing is left? wind and warmth, days and darkness, love and let-down, hurt and hope, carving us into totem poles that stand tall against the elements…and then a little less tall…and then a little less tall…until we’re gone.

hmmm. not the most uplifting sentiment for the new year but something to chew on.

i didn’t make any resolutions this year, at least not at the turn of the year. i’m always making resolutions in my head, most of them having to do with fighting *my* erosion:

- read more (working on that right now with Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan which is fascinating and also makes you never want to eat anything you didn’t handpick off the tree yourself again)

- drink less coffee (not doing so well with that one lately)

- hike more (check. hiked to the Hollywood sign on New Year’s Eve)

- challenge my brain from time to time to help prevent its erosion (for awhile i was into sudoku but recently i bought a book i’ve been taking on tour called Logical Deduction Puzzles and it’s an “Official Mensa Puzzle Book” i.e. a good mind-screw)

- watch less TV (doing great on this one since all the shows have been on re-run for the holidays. next week Grey’s Anatomy starts back up and shortly after that Battlestar Galactica will be back up and running so it’ll be all over)

- sleep more…

…it’s 2 minutes till midnight so i’m signing off now. happy 2007 y’all!
kyler ;)
