Discovering Artists Interview with Kyler
Kyler England
02.21.06
We’re keeping up to date with some of our favorite artists. Kyler England is one of them—still touring strong, this former East Coast acoustic rock songstress tells us about going west and writing new material.
Last we spoke you were touring to support A Flower Grows in Stone. What’s been happening since then?
I’ve basically been touring non-stop all over the country for the past couple of years. Somewhere in the midst of all that craziness I also made the East-West Coast jump, I moved from Brooklyn to LA.
Wow—that’s exciting. So have you put out a new album? Do you plan to?
This fall I released a collection of live recordings and acoustic demos of new songs called Live Wire. It’s very raw and stripped down. You can hear the title track as well as another track called “What You’re Looking For” at http://www.myspace.com/kylerengland.
I’m also doing some fully produced songs in the studio right now but I’m not sure yet when or how they will be released.
Cool! So have you been writing any new songs? Do you see your style changing or evolving?
I’ve been writing a lot and have a full album’s worth of material as well as many incomplete threads that I’m sure will unravel in their own time. I think with every song I write I get closer to who I am as an artist and as a person. That’s one of the amazing things about writing songs, you learn about yourself
as you go.
How have the recent shows been?
The shows for the most part have been amazing. I’ve met so many cool people along the way who help me out for no reason other than they love my music. I could say that gigs are kind of like pizza, even when they’re bad they’re good. That’s kinda true cause in the end I get to sing my songs for people so how bad could that be? But that wouldn’t be quite accurate. There have definitely been some super strange shows along the way that become the stuff of legends, but mostly the shows have been a blast and I’m grateful everyday that I do what I do.
I always love asking artists I love what they’re listening to. So what’s at the top of your CD list that you’ve been spinning?
I adore David Gray’s new album “Life In Slow Motion.” I’ve been way into Imogen Heap and I’m a latecomer to Death Cab For Cutie but I love their stuff. I also just heard Duncan Sheik live on KCRW out here in LA and he sounded amazing, I was really moved.
As a die-hard Duncan fan, I definitely agree. It was great to hear from you, Kyler. Keep us posted and thanks for taking time out to keep us posted!
