never surrender
i love the burbank airport. at least as airports go. it’s 8 minutes from my home, 10 with traffic. it’s small. checking in and getting through security is about as painless as it gets. they even let you leave your tennis shoes on, unlike the big city airports. but most of all i love the burbank airport because as i was sitting here tonight waiting for my flight and trying to keep myself entertained with high tech gadgets (laptop, cell phone, iPod) something familiar started nagging at the back of my consciousness. it took me a few seconds to identify the source of the distraction. was it indigestion? a snack attack? did i forget my toothbrush? then it hit me…i *know* that song that’s whispering in the background behind the roar of jets and people chatting on their cells. it’s the first pop song that i fell in love with and starred in the music video (recreation) for put on by my Brownie troop in which i wore a blindingly hot pink sweatshirt and black stirrup pants with turquoise high top sneakers. it’s “Never Surrender” by Corey Hart! i haven’t heard that song in years. i must have had it on cassette at some point cause i remember playing it over and over but that tape probably went the way of my stirrup pants. out like yesterday’s news. hearing “Never Surrender” again was like bumping into an old childhood friend unexpectedly with all the attached memories that surface as a result. i put down my gadgets and retreated into my mind to relish them. thank you Bob Hope Burbank Airport.
