random stuff about me, musical and beyond…(part 2)

installment #2 of random stuff about me…if you’d like to see this series continued, email me your burning questions and i’ll answer them if i can!

here are a few questions submitted by Kelly Goodlad (http://www.kellygoodlad.com)

what are your favourite songs you’ve written and why?

i’m guilty of being like a kid at christmas when it comes to my songs…remember how you used to grab a big box from under the tree, shake it a couple times and then rip into the wrapping paper with a vengeance? then you’d hold up your new transformer or my little pony and declare it was your favoritest present ever until you saw that bigger unopened box out of the corner of your eye?

usually i’m most excited about my newest songs because they feel like new toys. i actually hate being asked to pick my favorite songs of mine because i feel like i’m going to hurt the others’ feelings like the kids who never got picked first for the kickball team. if pressed, i think my fave song on the new record is “Something So Beautiful”…there’s just something about it that has a tight grip on me and even though i’ve written new stuff since then it’s still hanging in there at the top of my list.

when did you write your first song and what was it called?

i wrote my first song when i was about 16 and had been playing guitar for about 3 days. it was about this guy i had an enormous crush on and why he was emotionally unavailable. really bad song! i don’t remember what it was called but i know i’m blushing just thinking about how bad it was!

what are some similarities and differences between you and your twin?

for those of you out there who don’t already know, i have a twin sister who is an amazing backup singer when my tour comes to her town. she’s an ecologist and has always been my best friend.

similarities…our insatiable sweet tooths, our stubborness, our collective ass (inside joke i’ll let you in on..one day we were for some weird reason comparing our butts and i referred to the two of our butts as “our ass” by accident and on that day our collective ass was born), our over-achieving-ness, our ability to to leave anyone in the dust with our fast paced walks (don’t let our short legs fool you, you’ll be sorry!)…the list could go on, we have so much in common

differences…i never had bangs in middle school back when hair-hoppers roamed the earth wild and free so i was known as “Kyler no bangs” and was taunted on the bus ride home and forever scarred, Laura had bangs and piled them high with hairspray so she was instantly cooler than me…she also hence became known as the good twin (something to do with the bangs) and i as the evil twin which i still to this day have no idea how i came to deserve…continuing on the hair theme, Laura now has much shorter hair than me because she recently donated 12 inches of her hair to Locks of Love (http://www.locksoflove.org/) an organization that makes wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy…maybe she is the good twin?

there are plenty more similarities and differences but in order to spare my sister from being sucked into this journal entry against her will, i’m going to stop there. (i may have already gone too far with the collective ass thing) i have decided though, that when i’m ultra-famous i’m going to use Laura as my decoy to distract the paparazzi…apparently Jane Seymour sends her twin out of the house first and the media chases after her leaving Jane free and clear. great idea, though the few old ladies waiting to play Bingo outside my door downstairs in Brooklyn aren’t yet cause to take Laura away from her important efforts to protect the environment.

lastly, i just have to point out that for once i was way ahead of the game when back in my september journal entry i said that Johnny Depp is the sexiest man to ever live…People Magazine has just named my Johnny this year’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” i might have been behind the times on the bangs thing but i know how to pick my men!

kyler ;)

ps i’d like to add to my list of fave albums from part 1:
Radiohead “The Bends” i’ve been obsessed with this one lately
Cocteau Twins “Four Calendar Cafe” i lost my copy in a rental car and have missed this moody treasure
